How do I control my mind when my thoughts keep flying everywhere? I feel like I want to do everything but am actually doing nothing.
Simple tactic that I've used over the years to clear my mind.
This is part 4 of 4 of a series called “Sharpening the Blade.”
In case you missed it, here’s part 1, 2, and 3.
Next week we’ll begin a new 5-part series on “Why Relationships Matter.”
Whenever I start feeling overwhelmed by what seems like 100 things that are all important, I do something I call a brain dump.
I pull out Evernote and start writing down everything I'm thinking about.
It could be a to-do list that include every action item.
It could be me processing a frustration from something that went wrong.
It could be me deconstructing my business and deciding what I should focus on next.
It could be just me venting, journaling, and reflecting on my life and my direction and asking myself a lot of "why" questions.
Whenever I'm faced with things that are mentally demanding to process, there's just something about putting it to paper, seeing every tangent, train of thought, and bunny trail all clearly laid out.
Instead of feeling like I need to juggle 5 different lines of reasoning for 5 different subject matters all at once and feeling like I need to remember and develop all the ideas immediately, my mind can rest because it's all written out.
I can slowly develop each thought without feeling like I'll forget one of the trains of thought because I've taken the time to write it all down.
It's almost like my mind only has 1GB of RAM, but in the moment, it feels like I need 8GB of RAM. So the solution is to keep track of the extra data on my hard drive to access later once my 1GB RAM is freed up.
